- What we decide to feed our children when they are young can possibly determine their dietary habits and health for life. Children need to be taught from the beginning to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It is important that we don’t start bad habits at a young age and set our children up for diseases in later life.
- When children are given sweetened drinks, sweets, sweetened foods, and cola these items become associated with something good. It sets a child up for later in life choosing to “treat” themselves all the time. Sugar is nothing but “empty” calories. Continue Reading »

- This is a quick, very flavorful portobello mushroom recipe to try. Portobello mushrooms can be inexpensive and a good alternative to meat. Be creative with this recipe by adding chopped up onion, and/or bell pepper. My husband and I have made the recipe minus the yellow tomato, and chives, but added yellow onion. If you like eating portobello mushrooms I think you will find this recipe to be a good choice. If you have never experienced eating portobello mushrooms this recipe would be safe to prepare because of the enjoyable flavor it offers. Continue Reading »

- Meal planning with quick cooking ideas make life more enjoyable throughout the week when everyone’s schedule is so busy.
- Food items made up in advance make meal time less of a chore. If you have food already prepared you may be less apt to grab “quick” foods which could also be categorized at junk food. I don’t keep this type of food in my refrigerator or cupboards but I do go looking for it when I want something fast. How many times does this happen to you? Continue Reading »

- I am a strong believer in taking the time to read a food label. The packaging may look like the food is healthy with all the marketing comments on the front of the package, but you may be surprised when you take the time to actually read the ingredients. If you can’t pronounce it, you should not eat it. Continue Reading »

- I know soup doesn’t sound good in the “heat” of summer but this soup actually doesn’t have to be hot. I served at a just barely warm temperature. The flavor was just right with the recipe not having too much ginger or carrot. This recipe is a great way of adding ginger into the diet. Continue Reading »

- Probably the most popular natural treatment for nausea and motion sickness is to ingest ginger. There have been studies that show ginger may be more effective than Dramamine without the side effects. By taking ginger capsules every three hours, starting one hour before beginning a trip you can help avoid nausea and/or motion sickness.
Ginger is:
- a natural anti-inflammatory helping ease arthritis, bursitis, and other muscular skeletal ailments.
- good to use when needing to enhance the appetite. It can be grated over chosen portions of a meal.
- used to relieve bloating, cramping, and gas in the digestive system.
- helpful in stimulating the heart and circulatory system.
- supportive in protecting the liver and stomach.
- useful for hot flashes.
- soothing for a sore throat.
- like aspirin where it tones the cardiovascular system, reducing platelet build up.
- protective against the formation of ulcers. Continue Reading »

Strawberry Tofu Shake
1 12 oz. package of soft/firm tofu*
1 package of frozen strawberry’s
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp organic sugar or xylitol
Put ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Makes approximately 16 oz of shake.
- Be creative and use your favorite frozen fruit. I found the more strawberry I used (120z) the better the taste was. I couldn’t even tell it was made with tofu. *I used Mori-Nu firm tofu which comes in a box non-refrigerated. This brand of firm tofu is not real firm which works for a shake. The consistency is thick so you could also serve as a pudding. If using other brands from the refrigerated section of the grocery store I would go with soft tofu. I did chill in the freezer for about 30 mins.

- Natural safe colors used in preparing foods are: vegetable and fruit juices, paprika, grapes, beet red (powdered beets), and carotene.
- Much of the coloring agents are synthetic and potentially toxic. Fake substitutes are used to replace the natural, fresh colors of food.
- Some of the coloring agent chemicals have been withdrawn from the food industry use because of studies showing toxicity or carcinogenicity. Continue Reading »

- Vitamin C is vital for a healthy immune system, bone formation, collagen, energy production, and as an antioxidant.
- Studies have found people with a high intake of vitamin C reduced their risk of cancer.
- The protective role of vitamin C against the common cold, cardiovascular disease, and various cancers becomes significant above a 400-1,000mg intake a day.
- The body does not produce vitamin C. For a person to get 1,000mg of vitamin C a day from food would be equivalent to eating twenty-two oranges. This is why supplementation is essential.
- Studies have shown asthma symptoms can be reduced when taking vitamin C.
- Vitamin C has been used to assist those withdrawing from addictions such as nicotine, caffeine, sugar, narcotics, and alcohol. Continue Reading »
