There are a wide variety of natural food supplements.  I suggest becoming familiar with the different varieties available and the benefits they can have.  There are many good books written on the subject along with information on the computer.  Once you have done the research make a choice on whether or not you want to use natural food supplements.  Even though I follow a healthy diet I use some natural food supplements when I feel the need. Cholesterol Reducing Tips

I first want you to understand the difference in the two types of cholesterol.  There is dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol.  Dietary cholesterol is present in foods we consume.  Serum, or blood, cholesterol is necessary for life, and is the cholesterol in the bloodstream.  Eating foods high in dietary cholesterol can raise the level of serum cholesterol, but the body also produces cholesterol which is another way the serum cholesterol level is raised.  Some people are genetically predisposed to having high levels of cholesterol, but the levels are also largely influenced by what we eat.  Consuming foods high in saturated fat and/or high cholesterol is what affects our cholesterol levels.  We need cholesterol for good brain and nerve function.  Cholesterol is also an important part of every cell structure. Eggless Scramble

My husband and I have used this recipe when substituting eating eggs in our diet.  It is a good alternative while still getting protein in your diet.  When serving with a 100% whole wheat grain bread and butter, or as the picture above shows with rice and vegetables, the recipe would be a balanced meal.  The texture is a whole lot like scrambled eggs.  If you have wanted to try tofu but weren’t sure how to prepare it, I would recommend trying this recipe. Water is an important element to our health.  A person needs water in their system to survive.  A human being could go without food for approximately 30-40 days, but without water would only live 3-5 days.  On the average we are composed of about 70 percent water.  Our body water supply is responsible for or involved in practically every bodily process, including absorption, circulation, digestion, and excretion.  Water is necessary for transporting waste material out of the body.  It is essential we replace water that is lost through sweating and elimination. I found this recipe in “The Farm Vegetarian Cookbook.”  I have no idea why I have this cookbook.  It appears “The Farm” is an intentional community located in Summertown, TN. I have been making the scones for a few years now and every time I make them for others they rave about how good they are.  I have made some changes to the recipe to make a healthier version. Preservatives are used in the preparation of our food to prevent spoilage.  There are about 100 different chemicals that can be specifically mentioned on a label when added to food.  Common preservatives that are the main ones used in food preparation are vinegar, sugar, and salt.  Sulfur dioxide is a common preservative used in dried fruits. Qigong

img_1519

I recently attended my first class of Qigong.  The “Qi” in Qigong is pronounced chee, and the “gong” part is pronounced gung as in lung.  I have done Tai Chi in the past, which is a form of Qigong, so I was familiar with the different movement.  Documented history of Qigong goes back at least 2,500 years but it is said Qigong has been practiced over 5,000 years. Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich

I remember discovering this sandwich while visiting a friend in North Carolina.  While shopping in a health food co-op I decided to get something to eat at a little cafe that was part of the store.

Listed on the menu was a meatless reuben sandwich.  I never thought about what could be used to make a reuben sandwich meatless.   I loved the sandwich made with corn beef.  What a surprise when I learned they used tempeh (pronounced tem-pay) as the meat portion of the sandwich.  I am still learning ways to include tempeh into my diet and think this is probably the easiest. MSG and Food Coloring

Do you take time to read labels when buying food?  Personally, I learned from my schooling, if  I couldn’t pronounce an ingredient it more than likely was not going to be good for me to ingest.

Most people would be surprised to learn how many additives are used in packaged foods.  Flavor additives are added to prepared food to enhance the taste which will help in making the product more marketable.

As a general rule if there is a long list of chemical ingredients on a label, or you can’t understand the label, you might consider leaving that product on the shelf.  It is estimated the average American consumes approximately 5 pounds of additives a year. Continue Reading »

Sugar In Our Foods

Do you pay attention to what sweeteners have been added to the prepared foods you purchase?  Or do you use sugar substitute in your tea and/or coffee?  There is a lot of pro and con on whether or not sweetener additives are safe.  There are additives derived from natural sources, like sucrose (white sugar), and then there are additives like aspartame and saccharin which are chemically processed.  Sugar is the most used additive in the food processing industry.  On an average it is estimated Americans consume about 135 pounds of additives per year, 130 pounds being sugar.  It is no wonder people don’t feel good or can’t lose weight.
