When you need a quick meal that is balanced and healthy try making a home made burrito.  My husband and I every once in awhile will fix this recipe, especially when we don’t feel like cooking a big meal.  Even the kids can fix this.

There are many ways to prepare the burrito depending on what you want as ingredients.  Be creative and have a variety of choices. Continue Reading »

Struggling With An Exercise Routine

chaco-culture-041

I am just like everyone else when it comes to exercise, once I stop it is difficult for me to get back into a routine.  Even though I know how important exercise is for my health and well being.  The worst thing I could do is get out of the habit of just “doing it.”

In March, 2008 I was hired for a temporary job with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Taos, NM that lasted one year.  I allowed myself to get off schedule, not getting up earlier in the morning to get 20-30 minutes of floor exercise, and walking 20-30 minutes sometime throughout the day.  I did join a gym, but even found it tough to make it a habit to attend.  Beating myself up with negative thoughts about how I needed to get into a routine of exercising was not going to help, so I conscientiously reminded myself to work on a plan to get back on schedule when the time was appropriate.  Not letting that appropriate time get too far out of reach. Without our health we have nothing.  It is very important to keep ourselves in “tip-top” shape.  During this recession it is important to eat well to keep from becoming ill.  You are setting yourself up for possible illness, added weight, and damaging the immune system by purchasing inexpensive foods.  Don’t deny your body good health. Quick Healthy Snack/Dessert

Fruit and Nut Balls

This snack is very easy to prepare if you have a food processor.  I have not tried it with any other appliance (i.e., blender).

This snack can be made with any variety of dried fruits.  Be creative in coming up with your favorite combination’s.  I also use almonds and walnuts instead of cashews and pecans.

From what I have read I would suggest staying away from fruits that have been treated with sulfur dioxide.  Sulfur dioxide is used as an anti-browning agent and preservative.  I personally do not buy packaged fruits that have sulfur dioxide listed even though reviews have found no apparent hazard.

The recipe is:

2 cups pecans

1 cup cashews

1 cup raisins

1/2 cup dates

1/2 cup dried, unsulfured apricots

sesame seeds

7 Immediate Ways to Better Your Health

  • Exercise – We all know exercise is good for us, it’s a matter of taking time to do it.  I always suggest taking baby steps in making changes with any lifestyle modification.  Try starting out doing 10-20 minutes of some sort of stretching, aerobic movement, or strengthen exercise.  A little exercise is better than none.  Exercise will aid the body in oxygen, flexibility, toning, and longevity.  Exercise aids in the absorption and elimination of the food we eat.
  • Drink water – The body can loose over a quart of water a day through the lungs, skin, and kidneys as urine, ensuring toxins to be eliminated from the body.  Keeping yourself hydrated aids in the blood purification process which can help reduce the risk of disease in the future.  Six to 8 glasses a day of fluids is an adequate amount but try making that mostly water.  Other types of beverages can sometimes do more harm than good.  Herbal teas can be a good alternative.

Vegetarian Dinner Ideas: Tofu, Soup And Salad

A quick tasty dinner idea I do is take organic baked tofu and cut into bite size pieces.  I usually get flavor baked tofu from Trader Joe’s but most health food stores carry it.  It comes with 2 3.5oz blocks of firm tofu.  To get some of my protein I use 1/2 of the package.

An easy soup idea is to buy the boxed soups that you just shake and pour into a container to heat.  There is quite a variety of flavors like tomato, carrot, squash, and broccoli to name just a few.  How simple is that to prepare?  Eight ounces of the reduced sodium tomato soup that I recently used was only 90 calories for 1 cup serving.

How I Shifted My Lifestyle Following The Discovery of a Disease – Part II

After cutting out sugar and using Essiac Tea I started changing my eating habits.  I didn’t make drastic changes right away.  I took what I like to call “baby steps.”  Some things I stopped cold turkey, like coffee.  I was amazed how fast I was able to stop drinking coffee once I learned how caffeine was damaging to my immune system.  It only takes 72 hours to get caffeine out of ones system.

Alcohol was not to be had either.  Number one it is full of sugar and then I knew from common sense it just wasn’t good for my body.  Because I had a weakened immune system I needed to do everything in my power to take control of my health.

I became a vegetarian after learning meats contain immune system poisons like dioxin and PCB, along with hormones and antibiotics.  It is also high in fat.  Legumes became the norm for most meals.  I was making my own veggie burgers with black beans.  I would try mimicking dishes you could buy already made up, by buying a small portion to see what ingredients was being used to make the dish.  My husband and I began to eat fresh whole foods ignoring the processed foods that lack nutrition and full of toxins.

How I Shifted My Lifestyle Following The Discovery of a Disease – Part I

img_17503

When I was told I had ductual carcinoma in-situ (breast cancer) my reaction was panic.  How was I going to beat this disease? The first two suggestions I was given was to stop eating sugar and use Essiac Tea.  I immediately started practicing these suggestions.

Why stop eating sugar you might ask?  Well I read where cancer cells use sugar as a fuel to grow.  The pancreas releases insulin which is the hormone that sends sugar into the cancer cells.  The more sugar one eats the higher the insulin level.  I also read that high insulin levels is one of the biggest risk factors and promoters of breast cancer.  The sugar also impairs the immune system which needs to be in tip-top shape to fight against cancer cells.
